Caprica Recap - Episode 6

This episode opens in a surprisingly cool looking Tauron City. With all the Tauron 'dirt-eater' insults I had taken it to be a largely agrarian planet colony. Anyway, it seems Tomas Vergis (John Pyper-Ferguson), Graystones' Tauron counterpart and main competition, is about to stumble upon a crime scene. This is a flashback to the then glossed over theft of the chip Daniel used to put his daughter's avatar into the robot body. This, in turn, helped him keep his job after the talk show freebie mishap. A month later, after he's gotten the board votes to keep his job, Vergis comes back and in a vaguely threatening way tells Daniel that they should have lunch to discuss their 'situation'. That being the fact that Daniel got a Tauron mob member to kill a couple of his guys to steal from him. Later, Daniel's assistant Cyrus (Hiro Kanagawa) freaks out about the implications of Daniel going to the Tauron mob to steal from a prominent Tauron. Daniel is haunted by his thoughts of getting guys killed in order to get the chip he can't even figure out how to use. This seems to be getting good.

In the next scene Joseph's gone and got himself a Holoband. Too bad he can't figure out how to use it. If he really wants to find Tamara perhaps he should read the instructions, or find a teenager to help. Daniel barges in and gets all huffy about Vergis knowing about the theft. Joe says that's definitely not possible as he would be dead in that case then lays in on Daniel about lying to him about Tamara again. Daniel then goes home to angrily make a salad with some nice knives. Next Joe's on Sam's case about not doing a clean job while stealing the chip, and he tells him to bugger off in return. I love their bickering. Sam is the man. Joe's seriously worried about Guatrau revenge, apparently they're quite the powerful mob. In a later scene back at the Adama's, Joe's co-worker Evelyn barges in on him, because apparently he can't lock a door. She's all interested in his tattoos... and other things.

While Daniel is eating lunch with Vergis, he is surprised to find that Tomas is totally over the whole killing his men thing. The chip? He could care less. What he really likes is eating fine Tauron steaks with his fingers, and Daniel's Pyramid team. He likes them so much that he wants to buy them. I now want to eat steak with my fingers, because he's made it seem so great. Actually, he knows that for Daniel to appease his board members he needs to get the MCP chip he stole to work, and to do that he needs monies. Lots of monies that he could get for his team. Daniel is next seen talking with Cyrus about how they can't get the MCP to work, because they forgot to steal the instructions. Daniel knows the money deal is a trap and is sure they can figure out the chip thing on their own. That night, Daniel is watching Vergis rule on the talk show that he pretty much failed on. He's playfully making fun of the Graystones, while expressing care for them and their loss. He also mentions that he's decided to become a Caprican citizen, and Daniel realizes what he's up to. I don't know what he's up to at this point, but maybe I missed something. After a break and a few other scenes, Daniel is talking to Vergis again, about how he thinks he's trying to be all Caprican in order to take the military defense contract from him. But Tomas explains that the team is what's bothering Daniel and that it isn't part of his plan, but instead is the plan. Because that's what Daniel really loves, and it's Tomas' plan to destroy everything he loves. Double uh-oh, now he's showing tattoos, talking about the orphaned kids of his murdered coworkers. He's paying extra for the team, and then he'll find the next thing that Daniel loves so that he can bring the doom. He's all about slow painful revenge; I like his methods. Daniel doesn't appear to like them at all.

Back at the Graystone residence, creepy lab tech guy Philomon (Alex Arsenault) is still hitting on robot-Zoe. He's bummed cause he can't find a date online. Daniel catches him with his robot/daughter and is all mad, but only because of his smoking since he doesn't know Zoe is in the robot. It's rather funny, but I suppose Daniel just decides that his lab guy is only a little weird and not attracted to the Zoe-ness in the hyper-masculine robot. Next, Zoe-in-robot is online setting up Philomon with her v-world self. I would think she'd be more creeped out by him than infatuated but maybe she thinks he's strangely sweet. While he's fixing her torn off arm, he gets a message from mysterious Rachel, wanting to meet in v-world. Now he's happy. A slightly more suave him appears in v-world and meets up with a dorkier version of Zoe. In this scene I finally learn his character's name! Anyway, Zoe is in her Rachel costume, which is really just hideous glasses and terrible outfit. He sees right through it but she makes up some story about wanting to look like Zoe in order to scare off pervs in the club. Somehow this works.

In the meantime there are bombs being set off in Holoband cafes, and STO is being blamed. Sister Clarise is upset, and her spouses show her this cool jump drive type thing that downloads data from whatever it touches. They hastily explain that Zoe was able to make an avatar of herself and exist in v-world, and that she has to get that data. So she calls Amanda, and of course manages to talk her into letting her over and into their home. Silly Amanda. Where would the plot be without you? Clarise arrives at the Graystone's home, and is greeted by their poor paranoid android. They express a shared hatred of the inspector, and Clarise suggests they get pissed off of some antifreeze looking alcohol. Natually, Amanda is a lightweight and tells Clarise everything, even taking her into the lab. She talks about how much Zoe would have hated the scary robot Daniel was busy building which gives Clarise an awesome opportunity to steal lots of info off of the nearby computer. Wobbly drunk Amanda is talking about how their old house that Zoe liked burned down when she was five, not paying attention at all to Clarise and her magical jump drive. Near the end of the episode, Clarise is getting all stoned again, and her spouses don't approve. Well, until they find the chip, and then they're happy.

There are also a few side scenes of the teenage STO members meeting with Barnabas (James Marsters, Spike!), who hangs out under overpasses playing with barbed wire. First Keon meets with Barnabas in his usual location about helping Lacy. Then Clarise meets with the mysterious robot figure in the virtual confessional about apotheosis and such. Later, Lacy and Keon arrive to meet again with Barnabas but things don't go well. She's talking about the thing Zoe was working on, and how she wants to follow her plan through and has cargo she needs to get to Gemanon. Barnabas doesn't want to help her though, and yells at her until she leaves. Then he sets in on Keon and tells him he just wants to help Lacy because he feels bad about building the bomb that killed Zoe. Another revealing line! Barnabas wants to know about this mysterious cargo before he'll help. Which seems reasonable for an obviously less than reasonable man.

At this point in the series I'm finally used to the way it has been filmed. At first I found the sets and costumes too cool and sterile. Too stereotypically futuristic and perfect. One of the things that I liked about Battlestar (and Firefly, and Cowboy Bebop) was their imperfect future where the new things mingled naturally with the old beat-up things. I liked the grungy future and thought that Caprica should follow even closer along those lines since it was set 40-ish years in the past. Instead I got a past that looked better, sort of like the later three Star Wars movies. But now I've grown to appreciate the Caprica that's been modeled after the city before the Cylon attack, with the minimalist architecture and retro fashion. Now, finally, I really enjoy the styling of the cities and clothing. It might also be because I spend less time paying attention to those peripheral things since the story has picked up.
